Conrad: After extensive ridicule of the hacking of a major U.S. military server, I suggest a new topic of inquiry.
Amabel: I concur.
Seamus: Well I might have something for ya guys then.
Anson: What is it?
Seamus: It just appeared on the front page of our website today. A huge explosion happened off the coast of Europe. It sent tidal waves into the surrounding countries, and it even created a new island.
Conrad: Whoa, I say we check that out.
Amabel: Agreed. ^^
Anson: I’m in.
Seamus: Apparently a sudden geological event has caused the birth of an island. The explosion took out half a fleet of fishing vessels in the area. The ones that were left filmed and reported what was going on. They noted a new piece of land that wasn’t there before.
Amabel: Well that’s cool, but there is one thing that’s bugging me.
Conrad: Me too. While we’re sitting here basking in the glory of geology, I can’t help but feel troubled as well though.
Amabel: What do you mean?
Conrad: Well, with the new island, it means there are new resources. Whether it consists of wind, water, agriculture…it really doesn’t matter. Whatever resources it holds can be put to good use. I’m betting that every nation in the area is thinking the same thing. Politicians are probably thinking that they hit the jack pot. It seems like an open invitation than anything else.
Anson: I haven’t thought of that. Even so, I’m sure the United Nations would sort things out. After all, that was their primary mission statement when it was enacted in the fifties.
Seamus: I wouldn’t say that. They are rarely effective on such a large scale as this.
Anson: I beg to differ. The U.N. has simply been waiting for something like this.
Conrad: Seamus is right. Think about it. I don’t even recall them dealing with something this huge at all to begin with; let alone succeeding in a situation this big.
Anson: Again, there hasn’t really been a situation like this before. There hasn’t been a sure fire way to prove themselves quite yet. But now, they have their opportunity. I’m convinced that they are not going to let this opportunity slip by.
Seamus: Both of ya are providing very valid points, but I feel that we are starting a whole ‘nother debate with this topic. Anyways, details are sketchy right now. So there isn’t a lot of factual information we can talk about now anyways.
Amabel: Even so, it’s still exciting!!!
Conrad: It is rather exciting. This is the kind of extraordinary things that you can only read about in the history books. Yet, here we are living it for real.
Anson: The next few generations will be looking to us now. Imagine trying to explain this one to the younger folks to come. :D
Amabel: The economic outcome can hold positive potential as well. Imagine how many resources are on the island. It could provide a huge boost to the European Union’s economic power. Eventually, the U.S. can benefit from that as well.
Seamus: This is a type of event that will change the course of history. I say we monitor this situation for future discussion.
Amabel: I agree. This is bound to have many economic and political consequences.
Conrad: These consequences are going to be on a large scale and will impact thing to come for a long time. They should be recorded and discussed.
